How Do I Clean, Disinfect, and Deodorize for Pet Waste?

Most of our clients with STRONG PET ODORS have suffered from an event that prevented them from being able to manage the needs of those pets over a period of time, resulting in feces or urine accumulating on the floor.  Any number of things may have contributed to the condition of the home; your hospitalization, illness, surgery, cancer treatments, or other significant life events. We understand your predicament and are here to help.

Our trained technicians are compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental, and show remarkable attention to detail when it comes to remediation.  We can remove all affected materials including carpeting, padding, and even sub-flooring if required. Our IICRC-certified technicians clean the hard surfaces and deodorize the home.  This process includes the use of a broad-spectrum disinfectant with a 6 log kill, meaning it reduces Colony Forming Units by 99.9999%, which is statistically equivalent to having zero CFUs left.

How Do I Get Rid of Pet Odors on My Own?

  1. The hard and fast rule about odor remediation is to always first remove the source.  In the case of cat urine, for example, you have to remove all materials that have been saturated with urine.  The ammonia smell from cat urine will also permeate all soft materials in the room like furniture, drapery, carpeting, clothing, etc.  Ammonia can be toxic. Homes with excess concentrations of ammonia can cause irritation of the eyes and nose and can even lead to loss of smell. Once affected materials have been removed, clean the hard surfaces.

  2. Disinfect the entire area using electrostatic sprayers and a fogging system to ensure total and even coverage of the affected materials.  Steri-Clean uses a proprietary disinfectant that completely kills the odor by cleaving the cells or spores, leaving the room smelling clean and fresh.

  3. If structural members have been exposed, like floor joists or wall studs, clean them using an acidic solution like vinegar, then paint the wood with an oil-based primer to create a vapor barrier.  Applying to a saturated surface will cause the smell and staining to bleed through the paint. KILZ or BIN primers work well and can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowe’s. For more about the KILZ product, please visit this link.

  4. Replace materials that were removed like flooring, carpeting, etc.

Anyone working in an ammonia-rich environment should wear a properly-fitted respirator with an acid gas cartridge filter.  In extreme cases, an oxygen-supply unit may be needed.

WARNING: NEVER USE BLEACH TO CLEAN CAT URINE.

BLEACH AND AMMONIA CREATE A DANGEROUS VAPOR WHEN COMBINED
